I'm sure that like me most of you do your "big" walks at a weekend or when you have a few days off so I was wondering what sort of walking do you do during the week if you haven't got time to go too far but fancy a quick bimble? Most of my week day walks are done locally, are anything from 2.5 to 5 miles in length, aren't particularly hard and are usually on the flat, but they help improve my fitness and stamina and definitely lift my mood. I'm also a health walk leader and a couple of times a month, on a Wednesday, I take a group out walking to help improve their fitness and mental health too. These people are stalwarts and turn up regardless of the weather - there have been times when I've turned up expecting to find nobody there because the weather was so foul outside to find 15 folk standing there in their waterproofs raring to go! That's dedication for you. Anyhoo, my walk today was a recce for next Wednesday's health walk along the River Wansbeck in Northumberland near my home, so if you have time have a look at today's post on my blog to see what it's like locally. I used to be a health walk leader, but packed it in when it was expected of me to lead a party of ten, three of whom were smokers. One person refused to quit smoking for the duration of the walk, and so I refused to lead! I`ve never led a walk since. Now I generally walk alone (though you`re never really alone in Nature). I`m out walking 5 - 6 days a week, come rain, hail or shine, anything from a couple of miles to five miles. Rarely on the flat - I like to get some climbing in, at least on a part of the route. I normally take the car, and then walk. I have a half dozen or so `favourite places` places I go to regularly, where I`m on first name terms with the local inhabitants, farmers, gamekeepers etc. Walking certainly raises the spirit, I`m prone to depression, except for when I`m out walking. I`ve never ever returned from a walk feeling worse than when I set off, mentally and physically! PS. I was hoping (against hope) that another member might have responded here ... I waited, but no!

Hello Vagabond You are so right about walking lifting spirits. Now a strange thing to report...my better half has bought me one of those fitbit thingies....like a watch but it also records your steps over a day so you can gauge how active you are. Does this now qualify me as a geek on the hills Colin
