Budle bay to Guile Point hunting for ship wrecks and long lost treasure (a bit like a pirate
After our recent trip to Budle Bay where we saw what looked like an old wreck we decided its time to go and have a look see. After a quick goggle about it, we discovered that there is more than one wreck that it is possible to see depending on what the tides have been doing, i.e. if it’s been stormy they can be buried or exposed just depending on what’s been going on.
So we where going to be pirates for the day looking for long lost treasure, as I already had a peg leg I wanted to be captain and my better half was the deck scrubber (something she muttered about all the way round) I did threaten her with walking the plank but she didn’t take me seriously.
We didn’t have the right gear so we had to make do with straw hats, and I couldn’t find a parrot that would sit on my shoulder, so if the truth was know we really didn’t look like pirates at all.
Anyway the walk, we parked up on the side of the road near a farm in Ross or it might have even been called Ross Farm. From there we walked along the road heading towards the beach, this road turns into a farm track then into a grassy path which leads through the dunes to the beach. From there we turned right into Budle bay to look for the wreck we saw. Then it was a case of turning round and heading North up to Guile Point, once there heading back along the beach to rejoin the path through the dunes back to the car hopefully loaded up with gold and silver that we found on the wrecks.
Well that was the plan, now the walk:-
Walking up the track just past the farm as you can see the weather was just right for a day hunting treasure. I believe that this section is known as Ross Links
On the path in the dunes.
On the beach know as Ross Back Sands, me trying to look like a pirate.
Looking up towards a very distant Holy Island
Looking towards Budle Bay
First wreck the one we saw on a previous walk. (No buried treasure here so we moved on)
Taken on the way up to Guile point near a section known as Ross point or Wide open (not sure which it all looks like sand to me)
Closer
Looking back we decided to have a look on our way back when the tide would be further out.
Scrubber! I mean my better half having a look at another one (no treasure here neither)
Looking across towards the castle on Holy Island
Still looking at Holy Island this time at the village and Priory
Looking at the gap between Old law and Cockly Knowes
Still heading towards the Harbour
First sight of the old navigation aides at Guile point.
Getting closer
A few shot from a another trip (just so you know what it looks like)
i think that this is a twitchers hut
heading back
Looking back along the beach, you have to agree this is a gorgeous beach.
A wreck, looking at the sacks we hoped that they where full of gold, but no they where full of some sort of stone (for ballast I believe)
Another beach shot
And again.
The dunes and our way back.
The pathway leading back to the car.
Well we didn’t find any treasure and I had a bit of trouble with Scrubber ….EH! I mean my better half but there isn’t really that much to say about this walk, the beach is just what a beach is mean to be miles and miles of unspoilt coastline, fantastic you need to get out and see it yourselves.
We have returned and done this walk when the weather was lousy and the hills where just wet bogs, and couldn’t find any of the wrecks that we found on this trip.
One last little thing that I should point out this beach is down as a nudist beach so you might see more than what you expected to see, however every time we have been up here we haven’t seen a soul.
