There is a bit of gentle uphill and down hill on this walk but nothing to get excited about.
Terrain: - a bit of everything, road, woodland, track, mud path, & grass
Toilets: - in nearby Alwinton or in the pub at Harbottle (The Star Inn)
Pub: - The Star Inn or the Rose & thistle at Alwinton
Access: - it is possible to get picked up by car for most of the route should the worst happen.
Brief description:-
Park the car in the Harbottle Castle car park turn right and walk down either on the road or on the woodland track down towards Low Alwinton, cross the river and turn right and then stick to the path which goes from a small tarmac road to a grassy path stay on this path till you come to the footbridge and cross over river again this will bring you back to Harbottle, from there it’s a simple case of walking along the road back to the car park.
As per normal first photo taken from car park looking up at the ruins
The pathway in Ramshaugh Plantation (if you chose to take it)
On the bridge looking towards Alwinton
The river Coquet
Alwinton
Old lime Kilns at lower Alwinton
Looking back
Looking across towards where the Drake stone is
Towards the river, we take a more gentle approach to get there.
Again looking at the Drake Stone
Now on grass path looking back at park house (farm?)
On gravel track heading through Ferny Wood
Looks a bit overgrown but its not and the path is now mud
Crossing over the river, from here its straight back through the village back to the car park.
The monument at the car park
The ruins ,
Whilst you are here why not have a wander up & around the ruins , there is a well defined grass path that is kept short in the summer , and what a good place to practise your going up and down hill techniques’.(don’t worry if you fall because grass offers a soft landing & there’s no one around to see you)
