This walk I believe shows what the Northumberland National park is well know for miles and miles of nothing but rolling hills, some say featureless, some of the more experienced hikes would say boring but to me it cries out to be walked and appreciated, yes there are no great summits to be climbed, no waterfalls, no ruins, no strange rock formations, but get up there and just for a few minutes stop take a deep breath and ……………………………………..Nothing let the peacefulness wash over you , it’s a place where I go and recharge my soul.
Right that’s enough of that: - the walk.
Park up in the car park just before Buckhams Bridge ~ (there is a lovely information board put up by the park rangers have a read if you are into that sort of thing)
Then it’s a deep breath and straight up Deel”s Hill then staying on the same path cross the Dodd (how many Dodd’s are there?) straight to Dere street or the Pennine way from there turning right heading towards Black Halls at that point I not sure what route I took it could have been Dere street (the old roman road) the Pennine way or some quad bike track all heading in the right direction, anyway the gods of navigation kept me heading on the right route till I met up with the mountain refuge hut just before Lamb hill there I turned off the Pennine way and headed towards Yearning Law .(secretly pleased because I really didn’t fancy a climb up Lamb Hill) after that it was downhill all the way to Blindburn then back along the road back to the car.
This area is always wet and boggy and finding dry spots to stop is an art form in its own right.
I took lots of photos on this walk; however they all look very similar, sorry I don’t know the area well enough to name the individual hills, if you know what hill is called what please feel free to post.
As most of you should know by now the first photo is taken from the car park this time looking up Buckhams Walls Burn. (Not my route today)
First breathing stop not even halfway up Deel”s Hill looking back at the car park
Looking further up the valley towards Fulhope
Still heading up looking back down
I haven’t got a clue what these are called
The gate
You guessed it I haven’t got a clue what they are called
Wild Cheviot Goats, I always see them when I am in this area
Well at least I am not lost
First sight of the refuse hut
My next point the cairn at Yearning Law
Looking back
Sorry
Looking down to the ruin of Yearning Hall
Yearning Law
Looking down into the Blind burn valley
Way marker at least I am not lost
Looking back
Looking down just make out the house at Blindburn
Looking up the valley towards Fulhope
I have walked up this area several times and apart from the odd encounter at the mountain refuse hut where I have bumped into hikers doing the Pennine way I have never seen a soul, if you want peaceful, wild & windswept this is the place to come
Thanks for reading …………..Mick
