I have walked in this wood so many times I almost think that I know each tree on a personal level, so today I decided to leave all the way marked routes and forest trails and just do my own thing, no set route or distance just a pure simple walk going where I wanted when I wanted.
For the start I decided to park up opposite the caravan site and follow a muddy path that disappeared into the trees towards the Coe Burn.
First photo taken as I start my walk along the Coe Burn
At this point there is no route to follow but the ground is mostly clear so it isn’t a problem just following the burn
Looking back at the man made plantation
At this point I pick up a well used path that follows the burn
A bit further along
At this point I come to a clearing and come face to face with this; I decide that I shall head up there. (Coe Crags)
At this point I am still on a path and as I start to leave the wood, this is the view that starts to open up.
A few more photos as I slowly make my way up to Coe Crags
The stone cairn at Coe crags
A few photos from the top
Looking over the back towards Simonside.
A few more pics from the top
Back on my way down, again no particular route just going where I feel like going
When I entered the forest again I found plenty of these
Looking back up to where I was a bit earlier
A few more photos as I make my way back to the car.
Not a bad little walk, it’s a pity that there was a bit of a haze when I was up on the Crags which stopped me getting some good photos, and I have to admit most of this walk was on well walked paths despite them not being shown on any maps, I suppose that is the price we pay for these woods being so popular .
