Motorists and walkers alike, on leaving Rothbury via the B6341 over Alnwick Moor will perhaps have noticed (how can you not!) workers on the Cragside Estate have been busy felling trees, and generally clearing up the landscape, effectively restoring the moorland back to its original, wild state, the state it was in before Lord Armstrong planted all of his trees.
It`s said that Lord Armstrong took a barren, featureless moorland and turned it into an area of extraordinary beauty. Maybe, but I`m not convinced. Did he have to plant quite so many trees? 7,000,000 according to some figures! And then there`s all the Rododendrons, masses of them and god wot else! Personally, I`m glad this restoration work is being done, and not before time! Now the landscape will be less gloomy, remaining trees, flora and fauna will thrive, there will be space, open space - moorland! space to breathe! There will be light too, daylight - natural light as nature intended!
These are my thoughts, am I in the minority (as I suspect) or do others agree, if not with the whole of the above, then a part, maybe? If nothing else then surely the thinning down of the trees?
