In keeping with the great tradition of walking forums, this is where we all get to boast about how far we`ve walked in a single day. Makes a change from all the threads about which are the best walking shoes, where do I keep my map, which are the best boots to buy, and I`m planning on walking the roman wall, any tips please, and the best place to go wild camping kinda posts! Anyway back to the topic. I`ll start us off:
In 1973 I walked all the way from Newcastle upon Tyne (Gosforth to be more precice, that`s the posh part of Newcastle) to London (Walthamstow) via the A1. Mind, the AI wasn`t quite so busy back then. There were fewer cars in them days and the road hadn`t been dualled, not like it is now. Don`t think it was even a motorway back in 1973. Correct me if I`m wrong!
Well, me and my mate Billy Stubbs (he worked at the Wills cigarette factory) walked 290 miles so we did! It took us 23 hours and we only stopped a couple of times - once at Scotch Corner, and again at Wellyn Garden City, arriving London just before dawn the next day. Billy said his feet hurt a bit. I was fine though; fact is, I was good for another 100 miles, but there`s wasn`t really any point, we`d reached our destination. Besides, I was gasping for a cup of tea!
So, over to you, how far have you walked in a single day?
