Hey is there anybody out there ? I'm new on here and so far have only had correspondence with the administrator. Come one you lot, start posting - lets see some of your walks or even just chat about anything - the weather? Gear and equipment? favourite walks? Hope to hear from some of you soon. Bitterly cold today, and a biting wind as I made my way up to Great Ryle, a favourite walk of mine, I`ve been home an hour and I`m still thawing out, but so glad I went, it helped clear my head. Over the last few weeks I`ve put a lot of effort in trying to breathe some life into these forums; not just by posting regularly, but by joining and posting on other forums, putting links up, here and there, trying hard not to be too obtrusive, like a spammer. I even thought of closing the forums down, or altering the whole layout, turning it into a blog - my blog. After all, 90 percent of the posts on here have been made by me. Ideally I would have liked to have taken more of a back seat, or at least to have posted less regularly. Forums like these need to see a good balance of posts by members, different members on all kinds of subjects - that`s what makes them interesting, attracts more members. It`s all very well my posting every day, but people on forums don`t want to read my stuff all the time, they want to read, and react with other members - that`s what these forums are all about. A local forum for local people (and anyone else who wants to join). I fear the twitesphere, faceless, etc has seen the death of many a forum. Did I say `faceless`! Well, let it stand. PS. Hello Colin nice to see you back, hope you are well, there`s a post on the Black Middens Bastle might be of interest! northumbrian-hills.freeforums.net/thread/72/black-middens-bastle

Hi Paula, I’m sorry to say that I’m one of those people who, looks on here occasionally, and very rarely post any more, I spent a lot of time on the old forums putting loads of stuff on them only to wake up one morning and find that it all went ,and I had lost every thing so I’m very reluctant to spend any time posting stuff on here just in case it disappears , I started a blog and keep stuff on there that way I know what’s going to happen to it . I personally think that Facebook (love it or hate it) is responsible for the death of many forums, its quick simple which seems to suit the younger generation ………….and I must admit I struggle with it. Any way…….. hello …………..nice to meet you :)and I have read your blog in fact I will link it to mine if you are ok with that , Northumberland could do with a bit of exposure on this internet thingy Take care …………..Mick

Mick.
If I had intended to close the old forums (The Northumbria Walking Forums) I would have notified the members beforehand.
I did not close down the old forums, some low life hacked them. I too woke up one morning to find everything wiped out, just a blank page. Then the guy who`s server I was using let me down, all I got was promises, and more promises, quite sickened me off. I tried all ways to get them restored. In the end I gave up in despair. He took my money and he disappeared!
The people who run these forums (proboards) have an excellent track record and their support is second to none. I don`t think they will be doing a disappearing act any time soon - but you never can tell! Suffice it to say, I have no immediate plans to close these forums. If I do decide to close them the members will be notified in advance as a matter of course, obviously!
I am nothing if not honourable.

Hi Please don’t think that my comment's where a dig at you personally , I just think with these “free forums” you never know what’s going to happen until its to late ………….. I have seen it before , and I know if you knew what was going to happen you would have let us know . Cheers Mick

Hello Vagabond,
Even if people are not posting - are you getting plenty of traffic to the site? Can you tell - are there stats?

Hi Colin,
In the admin panel there`s a whole page devoted to statistics, eg no of page views on any given day, the number of posts made, threads created, new members etc. There`s a calendar, and also a graph, takes up half a page with a 4 or 5 different colour lines, all rising and falling, peaks and troughs - looks like a mountain range - you know the kind of thing! There`s a very high peak 16 - 17 February. There`s also something called Google Analytics, something I`m looking into. It`s not the Google tool used to get on their search engine (done that), it`s something different.
And there`s the Information Board at the bottom of every page, tells us who`s online, how many guests, members etc. Not always reliable, it can give false information, eg if a guest clicks on a particular board/category, let`s say something in `Galleries` then re-clicks it, then the board will interpretate that as 2 guests viewing, when it is in fact the same guest, same person, if that makes sense!

Here`s some stats for yesterday, Wednesday March 4th. Posts made: 56. Threads Created: 47. Page views: 1,257. Impressive or what? Dunno if we`ll see figures like that again!

Hello Vagabond
Very impressive - i reckon Mick must have been up most of the night :-)
I will try and add to his posts ( he has covered a lot of the walks i have done) or add the new ones as well. Probably once we have enough detail up on the forum then maybe people will come. Kind of Kevin Costner and Field of Dreams

Just to say, I hope everything is working ok for everyone; let me know please if you`re having any problems with posting or whatever; and if there`s a particular board or a category that you`d like to see included, anything I might have missed. I don`t want to swamp the place with too many categories/boards, but a 2 or 3 more`d be ok. PS. Still thinking on Norfolk
