Today I got it very wrong, the planned walk was to park up at Hethpool, and join the saint Cuthbert’s way up to Tom Tallon’s crag from there cut back and head up to the summit on Easter Tor and have a look around with nothing set in stone from that point.
Well we got there parked up, a lovely cold day, a light covering of snow on the tops, all the making of a good day. Me being a know all hadn’t bothered to check the weather; (they always get it wrong anyway).
However once we set off the weather gods really showed us how displeased they where with us, within ten minutes the wind started to howl, clear blue sky went quickly to grey and icy cold rain started to lash down, my better half naturally blamed me for this turn of events and started promising me all sorts of unpleasant things if her hair got wet and went frizzy.
It was obvious that getting to the tops would be a complete waist of time so when we got to Torleehouse we decided just to follow the road down past old Yeavering and walk back through Kirknewton from there a quick check of the map suggested grabbing the footpath at westnewton across the river along the side of the bell stopping briefly to have a look at the waterfall and back to the car.
However at westnewton we found that the foot bridge was closed due to flood damage from a few weeks earlier. (That was my fault as well), so much to my disgust we had to walk all the way back along the road.
Yes it pored down all the way; yes my better half’s hair went frizzy & yes I got an earful all the way home.
Not my best day.
Taken from the car park
Our target Easter Tor
Looking at our route (note the blue sky)
The Collage burn showing signs of recent flood damage
Entering a small section of a unnamed plantation
My better half looking at the sky (she is not a happy person at this point)
Look up
It doesn’t look so dark in front
Looking back we have just had a downpour
Again just looking back
The bell
Our target for today
Looking across to a distant watch hill or Lanton Hill where there is some monument to something (I really should find out) any one know?
The way ahead the wind is starting to get up now (that’s my fault as well)
Cheviot goats
Last look back won’t be going up there today
Big goat
More of them Yvonne wanted to take the small one home
Cattle no the photos not blurred its rain
Walking back look at her face I am in so much trouble
Yep still raining
Not our best days walking but it goes without saying it wouldn’t have happened if I checked the forecast
