Haltwhistle markets itself as the centre of Britain and you might have seen the speculation that a devolved Scotland would strip the town of it's carefully developed brand identity. Perhaps not of real interest to most of us but it does remind me of the industrial past for Northumberland. At one time the town was the centre of a busy mining area. The Haltwhistle burn, just outside and a little to the east of the town had a small railway running up to the quarry by the Roman Wall. By all accounts it was a dark satanic mills area. Nowadays the railway lines are replaced by a good path but there are still the odd chimney hiding behind creepers or within an industrial site at the bottom of the burn.
