I would like to write a little about the Mill. It's across the College burn from Hethpool. There are notes on the NNP website which suggest that there was a mill here back in the 15th C and probably earlier. The mill has been converted on an open plan basis and is one of our favourite holiday homes in Northumberland. It's warm, quiet and there are great walks around here. You look out on Great Hetha and behind the Mill are the Newton Tors. This is a painting by local ( Rothbury ) artist Joe Hush showing the mill and the view is south into the College Valley This view is from the front field looking towards the Mill. The Valley has a large stone circle plus iron age forts and i had always imagined this stone as one of the ancient ones. The reality is that it was probably a gate post stone :-( The skies can be very beautiful around the Mill Prices out of season are relly low, i think just under £400 a week See more here

Stone gate posts are a part of our heritage (they tell a story); I have seen some fine examples on my walks. Sadly, a small minority of landowners take a different view; they see them as a means of supplementing their incomes. One such stone, at Whitton, near Rothbury was `removed` by the then landowner and sold at auction for a considerable sum of money, well into three figures! An attempt was made to remove another stone in the same locality, this was aborted when the stone broke in half during the operation to pull it out of the ground. The pieces lie where they were dragged by tractor, testimony to the avarice of man.
I wrote about this in some depth on my old forums because of how strongly I felt about it. Sadly, the text has now disappeared into the ether. As for the stone that was put into auction, I have it on good authority that it now stands as an ornamental feature in someone`s back garden.

Yes....there is little respect for animals or history unless it is money related. A little way down from where i live lies Long Meg and her Seven Sisters...a rather nice stone circle. There is a legend that the landowner back in the late 18th C tried to dynamite the stones but a thunderstorm thwarted the attempt.Nothing changes much but i do believe that some owners are more responsible and that gives me hope.
We then get the changes where i just dont know if they are right or wrong....for instance maybe 10 years ago a planning application was made for a wind turbine to stand in front of the mill, you see getting electricity here, across the College burn was a challenge. Don't know why it never came to fruition. It would have changed the view - that is sure but maybe this would not have been so bad. who knows.

I found my original images of the Whitton gate posts, this is from 4 or 5 years ago, how time flies, and how long, I wonder, did this post stand here before it was removed - fifty years? a hundred?! Photos in Galleries, this link: northumbrian-hills.freeforums.net/thread/80/ Apologies for going off topic.
